Do You Have Pet Allergies? Tips for Dealing With Them

02.25.2014If you have found yourself suffering from pet allergies, you’ll be happy to hear about some things you can do to make the situation bearable and keep your furry family members. When it comes to dealing with pet allergies, here are some things you can do to control the situation in your home:

  • Get yourself an effective air filter for your forced-air heating and cooling system
  • Invest in a high-quality (HEPA) vacuum and sweep your home on a daily basis
  • Dust your furniture and shelving daily
  • Brush your pets outside at least every other day
  • Keep your pets off the bedding and furniture, and change/clean your sheets and blankets regularly

When you’re looking into an air filter that will remove allergens from indoor air, you’ll want to find a filter that’s fairly high up on the MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) scale, which rates filters on a 1-16 scale, according to how well they filter out the smallest particles. Residential filters that are good at removing allergens, including pet dander and hair from your pets, generally come in the MERV 8-12 range. While higher MERV filters also will capture these airborne materials, they also may impede system airflow, reducing your HVAC system’s efficiency and also causing more stress on parts. You may also want to consider a high-efficiency filtration system that requires special modifications to your heating and cooling system, or else a stand-alone air-cleaner that uses a HEPA filter or electrostatic filtering.

When you are looking into the right air filter system to assist you with getting your pet allergies under control, turn to a professional who can help assess your individual needs and address these issues. Fresno is located in a dusty region, and this also can help when regular allergies kick in.
